Unsurprisingly, the huge meandering Lake Charlevoix, navigable from Lake Michigan, dominates the geography of Charlevoix County, and all the principle cities of Charlevoix, Boyne City and East Jordan grew up on its shores. Some will be surprised to learn that Beaver Island and other islands in the northern Lake Michigan archipelago are under the jurisdiction of Charlevoix County—though the islands lie closer in distance to Emmet County (hence the inset map of Beaver). Less well known, but just as beautiful are the forested hills of eastern Charlevoix County and the deep aquamarine Thumb Lake.
